The achievements of the West Bromwich-born singer were recognised in last year’s festival at a performance of Lady Sings the Blues at the West Bromwich Central Library when an award was made to Val by Sandwell Council for her contributions to music over many years. Her acclaimed Billie Holiday tribute is only part of her notable career in jazz. She has been one of the country’s finest ever jazz swing singers for many years – from her early career with Birmingham’s Second City Jazzmen through to national fame – and, rather surprisingly, is also an authority on the Bronte sisters, having written and performed an acclaimed show on the subject.
