Since the band’s formation in Edinburgh in January 2018 the Tenement Jazz Band has built an instant reputation for old-style New Orleans jazz played with youthful verve. Initially a six-piece, the band has now settled down to a five-piece, with the band’s founder, trombonist Patrick Darley, joined in the front line by fellow-alumni of Edinburgh University, Charles ‘Chuck’ Deerness and soprano saxist Tom Pickles. The drums-free rhythm section consists of bassist Simon Toner and John Youngs doubling banjo and guitar. Already last year the band played the Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Islay Jazz Festivals and had a short sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe with The Red Hot Roots of Jazz, to be repeated in 2019. The band is particularly popular at swing dance festivals in both Scotland and England.
