No Birmingham jazz festival would be complete without the outstanding clarinettist/saxophonist/composer/arranger Alan Barnes. His career since leaving Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band has taken in playing with many of the top American jazzmen, collecting over 30 British Jazz Awards in at least five categories and being twice nominated as BBC Jazz Musician of the year. He combines indefatigable touring with running his own Woodville record label. He has put together all-star groups to play a mighty range of his own jazz suites, specifically at Birmingham the Marbella Jazz Suite, and is equally at home in evcry format from duo upwards. Alan’s rapport with audiences is illustrated by the number of festivals where he MCs as well as playing. Alan appears at the festival as soloist and as part of the band for Lady Sings the Blues.
‘His stylistic range is quite phenomenal…He has a wonderful capacity for suggesting a given style without actually imitating anyone.‘ – Dave Gelly
