It is not easy to characterise the music of singer/songwriter Florence Joelle who cites such different singers as Eartha Kitt and Billie Holiday as influences. Aided by jazz organist Pete Whittaker and bassist/flautist Ian Marcus, Joelle’s authentic organic sound, deeply rooted in the past, vibrates in the present. Her third album, Life is Beautiful if You Let It, has been memorably described as ‘a Franco-Anglo pot pourri of Latin and classic jazz, vintage and contemporary blues, gypsy jazz, 50s rhythm and blues and Parisian torch song.’ So be prepared for surprises!
