Digby Fairweather has been a great influence for good on the British jazz scene, not just for his distinctively melodic trumpet style. The Jazz Centre UK which he established at Southend is going from strength to strength, with enlarged premises, daily opening, an impressive display of memorabilia, a comprehensive archive and an ever-growing programme of events. Digby also has a fine track record as jazz writer, broadcaster, archivist and bandleader – his Half Dozen has been one of the most popular of British small groups for many years. He is, of course, also the Patron of the Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell Jazz Festival, only the second (following Humphrey Lyttelton) in its 34 years. This year, as ever, we can enjoy his trumpet skills, inimitable personality and love of great songs of the past.
