Bobby Woods was born in Chicago and grew up surrounded by the sounds of jazz, blues, gospel and soul, with early influences including Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. In 1987 and 1988 he received the award of Best Male Soul Singer at the Hummingbird Black Music Awards, fore-runners of MOBO. Now Birmingham-based, but touring widely, he has become a very popular fixture at the Birmingham festival.
